Best press ever.Nov 04, 2009 I've owned this pot for over five years and it still works as perfectly as the first day. The thermal feature keeps your water from losing a few degrees while you are brewing, and temperature is important to perfect coffee. The person who complained that the coffee was cold in 45 minutes...who the heck is going to drink pressed coffee after 45 minutes anyway? The coffee has been sitting on the grounds that entire time and has become bitter. Pressed coffee is meant to be consumed as soon as it is done brewing. This pot has held up much better than any glass press I've ever had and is well worth the money.
Sturdy and reliable with excusable flawsOct 19, 2009 This coffee bird has been in twice- or thrice-daily use in our two-adult household for two and a half years. It has pressed from 5 to 12 tablespoons of coffee ground at coffee shops, in a Krups blade grinder, in a Cuisinart blade grinder, and in two Cuisinart burr grinders. It has kept coffee warm for three hours and, under a tea cozy, it has kept coffee hot for four hours. It might keep coffee warm for longer, but it's rare that 32 ounces of the stuff will last that long around here.
It is perhaps not the best French press you can buy for a few reasons. First, it uses a single rubber-edged press filter at the bottom of its plunger rather than the three-part anchor, mesh, and support filters you find in Bodum's Chambord filters; as a consequence, more grounds make it into your cup. Second, because it is thermal it encourages you to keep your coffee in the press for the whole morning: the longer you keep your grounds in contact with hot water, even at the bottom of the press pot, the bitterer your coffee will become. Third, 32 ounces is a lot of coffee, well over the 10- or 16-ounce quantity our doctors would rather we drank every day.
Neither of these problems bug us: our good coffee and bland palettes have made this one of the two or three kitchen tools we use several times a day. And we're just hoping that medical researchers shift the quantity they mean when they write about moderate coffee consumption.
UnbreakableSep 04, 2009 I bought the Bodum Columbia after noticing cracks in the bottom of the its predecessor's glass beaker (and not its first predecessor either). The brewing time required by a French press results in "cooler" coffee as a matter of course compared to a regular coffee maker, but, at 5,280 feet in altitude, the water is not that hot in either case. I used an insulated container for the extra coffee in the old glass beaker press to keep it hot for a short period time which the Columbia will do, too. I have to say that I bought the Columbia at Sur La Table for $80 which is comparable to the Amazon price ("marked down" from $107).
an excellent coffee makerAug 25, 2009 This French press style coffee maker works beautifully. The coffee is in the style of other French presses, full-bodied since there is no paper filter. The construction is solid, both because there are no breakable glass components and because it is simply well-constructed. The overall appearance is elegant. Heat retention is better than other models I have tried, although if you really want your coffee to be scalding hot after 30 minutes, you need to get a thermos. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Won't Break- But Tips OverAug 12, 2009 I, like most, have went through glass carafe after glass carafe and turned to this alternative. Great concept- poor design. It has tipped over on my counter several times causing a nasty coffee mess to go allover! With so many other designs out there, no need to have this potential mess in your kitchen.
