5Groove your life awayOct 05, 2007
I can't say enough about how this album has recently made me a happier person... I just ordered this from Amazon about a week ago, got it in two days ago, and I haven't let it leave my sight!!! I lost it several years ago and now I've got it back!!!! Teena Marie is a phenomenal talent who sometimes doesn't get enough credit. The fact that she produced this album, arranged all of the music and sang her behind off throughout, will blow you away alone. Many fans will enjoy the staple "I need your lovin'." It's bass-line is just plain electric! Now I can skip over a couple of Tracks such as "Young Love," and "Chains" which has an intro with a male playing a bailiff (Rick James perhaps?) sentencing someone for "being in love." Kind of cheesy to me.

The title track is a wonderful tribute to her father. Very sweetly sung.

But "You Make Love Like Springtime" is a masterpiece. It begins with a very infectious bassline and accompanying Brazilian rhythm that nearly causes anyone with a soul to break their necks dancing to it! The melodies and the simple chord changes that she uses are simply delicious. The horn lines are tasteful and not too overpowering. And her voice is luscious and sensual.

"Tune in Tomorrow" is a fiery ballad with many jazz elements in it. It's almost like a bluesy waltz with lush and beautiful chords. Very tasteful in her approach of it, she begins very softly as if a lover would speak to you in the morning. Then she gradually builds up the intensity throughout the song into a passion laced "trade-off" session between herself the pianist and the guitarist, (unfortunately the CD version does not mention their names...) twisting and turning and becoming something of amazing quality.

Then the song blends in flawlessly into the
"You Make Love like Springtime reprise." It's virtually an instrumental continuation of the previously mentioned original which just gives you an extra few minutes to dance your @$$ off, fall into a trance, and enjoy the mess out of this song even more. In the reprise she doesn't necessarily sing any verses, but she plays with a couple of chants, sounding sensually serene, and playful. She even quotes Marvin Gaye (tactfully) by singing "You make me wanna holla... the way you do my life... You make me feel good....."

5Straight up Masterpiece!Aug 20, 2007
This is probaby my favorite Teena Marie recording of all time. Every song on this album was slammin', from beginning to end. It is definitely her best Motown recording. I urge anyone who is a real fan of her's or a fan of r&b to go and cop this one on disc because you never know when it might become unavailable.

5Another 80s classic!Jul 31, 2007
Though I've always fully recognised her talent, I've never been a huge Teena Marie fan. (For instance, I like songs like "Behind The Groove" and "It Must Be Magic" but not enough to buy them. And though it was one of her most popular songs, I could never get into "Square Biz"). But I've always loved this album. Or, more accurately, I've always loved the opener, "I Need Your Lovin'". The way the tune starts off with that solo bass line before the rhythm section and strings kick in, has fascinated me from the first day I heard it back when it was first released. For some reason or the other though, I never got round to buying the album.

Well, better late than never and even though I'm 27 years late, I'm totally happy and satisfied now that I have it. "Young Love", "First Class Love" and the title tune are all great songs, well played and well sung. Credit to the lady, who wrote and produced the whole album herself. "Chains" I can take or leave but I'm rewarded fully towards the end of the album with the sweetly jazzy "You Make Love Like Springtime", "Tune In Tomorrow" and "You Make Love Like Springtime (Reprise)". As I didn't own this album on vinyl I am unable to report whom the brilliant musicians were, who played on it. Once again, (as with Grover Washington, Jr's Feels So Good, which I reviewed recently), Motown has seen it fit not to include this vital information on the inner sleeve notes. I wonder what they're thinking?

Anyway, there's great singing and great music on this great album. It doesn't sound dated at all so you don't really have to be a great fan of music from the 80s to enjoy it.

5Ladies and Gentlemen....Lady T!Jun 12, 2007
I wish I was alive when this album first came out...but here's to making up for lost time! I really can't understand why Teena doesn't get half of the acclaim she is worthy of. This is definitely one of her best albums, and I can't say that any song on here needed to be skipped. The only setting I have my IPod stuck on with this album is "REPEAT." "Irons In The Fire," "Young Love," "You Make Love Like Springtime," and "Tune In Tomorrow" are album highlights that showcases what Teena does best-blowing away the competition. Long live the T!
