Description:

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Rock and Roll s the thing, and Jerry Lee s the King... or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself The Killer. Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, La. Except The Killer, of course.

Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee s life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades.

He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He cancelled one appearance, and only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they re ALL here.

For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When producers tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, Jerry Lee doesn t think he could possibly do a better show.

This DVD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.

the sound and picture do not match in a number of places. I sent one back and got another and same thing, so it is a problem with the production. Also, the older Austin City Limits shows do not have the crispness that newer shows have. Norah Jones, for instance, is crystal clear in video and sound. As for the show, the Killer is very good and it is worthwhile.

5Jerry Lee Lewis "Live from Austin, Texas"Oct 18, 2008
JERRY LEE ROCKS!!! HIS BAND ROCKS!!! THIS CONCERT DVD ROCKS!!! Jerry Lee and his band perform at their very best on this concert dvd that was filmed October 17, 1983 on the Austin City Limits TV show. Jerry Lee plays his classic Rock & Roll songs, along with some of his classic country songs and also performs a gospel song. The running time is approximately 55 minutes, but every minute rocks. This concert showcases his aggressive, dintintive piano playing style.

The line up consists of Jerry Lee on piano and lead vocals, Kenny Lovelace on guitar and fiddle, Joel Shumaker on guitar, Bob Moore on bass, Bill Strom on organ, and Buddy Harmon on drums.

The entire concert is outstanding. Some highlights I liked inlclude: "You Win Again" (a Hank Williams classic that Jerry Lee turned into a gold record in the 50"s), "39 and Holding" (a Jerry Lee courtry classic about growing older), "Rock and Roll Over", "Boogie Woogie Country Man" (this is a good one that showcases his distinct piano playing style and singing style), "CC Rider", "Chantilly Lace", "I'll find it where I can", "In the Garden" (this is the traditional gospel song), "No headstone on my grave" (I want a monument!), "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' goin' on".

At times during the concert Jerry Lee plays the piano with his right foot while also playing with his hands. This concert dvd showcases his unique piano playing and unique singing style. This was Jerry Lee's only appearance on the Austin City Limits TV show, and it was an outstanding performance. He was asked to come back and perform again, but turned them down because he didn't think he could do any better than this performance.
It is outstanding, and therefore I highly recommend it.

5The real Mc.Coy of Rock and Roll !Oct 14, 2008
This albums are a real tribute to the talent of one of the most original interpreters of this genre of music. His interpretation of Rock and Roll on the piano is unique to him. Well worth adding to any collection. -JM-

5Jerry Lee's the ManOct 02, 2008
I bought this DVD for my Dad for Father's Day. Isn't it funny how music from the 50's & 60's still sound so fresh, while a lot of today's music is stale after two weeks? Jerry Lee is a legend in any circle, his music is timeless and full of energy, he's a real rocker from back in the day. This DVD was recorded in 1986 and is a must have.

5Jerry Lee Excels In 1983 PBS-TV ClassicMay 20, 2008
This 15-song set originally recorded in October of 1983 for PBS' "Austin City Limits" features the Killer at his best- mature, confident, and relaxed- mixing country, rock'n'roll, and gospel with an equal blend of grace and fire. Very little editing has taken place from the original broadcast with all the songs present and in their original sequence. The material, the band, the production, and Jerry Lee himself are all top-notch. Yes, "Last Man Standing" is great- but go back 20-plus years and watch the power of "Chantilly Lace" and "Boogie Woogie Country Man", the vivid "39 and Holding", and the wild "What'd I Say" and you'll get an excellent glimpse into what Jerry Lee, and his legacy, are all about.
