Haunting and BeautifulDec 01, 2007 Szymanowski's "Stabat Mater" rapidly became one of my favorite choral/orchestral works when I first heard it on this recording. It is fitting that the Third Symphony is also added to this CD, as they are both governed by a melancholy mood. "Stabat Mater" stands out more on this recording than the symphony, however, as the latter is a bit muted in the technical details. But there are no complaints about the singers or the orchestra. The tympani grows appropriately violent near the climax of "Stabat Mater." The orchestra, soprano, and baritone are mournful and convincing. I would have liked to hear more body out of the tenor in the Third Symphony, and I would have preferred that the orchestra and chorus were more distinct, but I may be getting nit-picky on this one. I still recommend the entire CD, especially if you are not yet familiar with these works.
