Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot. | | | Product Details: | | | Product Length:

Really cool gadget with a couple of flawsFeb 09, 2010 I have to admit, I never really wanted a Kindle. I like to feel the paper and smell the ink of the real thing when I read. But, my husband is a technology wonk, and he got this for me for Christmas. I've come to appreciate several things about my Kindle: the ease and speed of buying books online and having them downloaded to my Kindle almost immediately, being able to store an unlimited number of books on a unit that's small and light enough to fit in my purse (perfect for travel), and the added benefit of being able to review documents, highlight, and notate if I need to.
The two biggest problems I have with it are with the display. There is a definite glare issue if you're reading under direct light - a problem you wouldn't have with a real book. Second, if they put so much work into designing a reading light attachment, why not put the effort into making the screen backlit? There are times when I want to keep reading after my husband goes to sleep, but I don't want there to be a reading light on to disturb him. It seems simple enough to me that they could do this - I'd be willing to pay some extra money for this feature. It boggles my mind that they didn't think of that.
Overall, this was a great gift and I'm really glad my husband got it for me, because I probably wouldn't have bought it for myself.
present for my wifeFeb 09, 2010 My wife had this on her xmas wish list. It's very well built and delivery was early. It has always been in "range" for wireless downloading books and newspapers and that's a neat feature. The battery seems to last forever. For those well researched this will be obvious, but If I was to perfect the next generation I would include touch screen navigation (the toggle switch is about a pleasing as the IBM's attempt at replacing the mouse pad with that post thing in the middle of the laptop keyboard), I would appreciate back light feature, and I struggle with the menu for finding my way around a magazine or newspaper download version. For reading books it is excellent but next version or the competitions next version will do well to make navigation easier and menu's more robust for newspaper. My wife gave it 5 stars but hey I bought it and it could be better- 4 stars for me.
a must haveFeb 09, 2010 This is my first experience with an eBook. It is not complicated has a lot of storage and is visually appealing and is VERY easy to carry around! I do not leave the house without my kindle it is the best thing I have ever bought and well well worth the expense! I have never had any problems with it. It offers a wide selection of books, the screen has no backlighting so there is no eye strain and you can read it on very sunny or cloudy days it is very easy to see. I also love the text to speech option. On nights when you really want to read your book but are too tired and just need to sleep I listen to the book for a while. I am a college student so I have my personal reading and many of my textbooks on it. You can buy books much cheaper then at a bookstore and you can take notes/bookmark pages/highlight which is great for a class or any book club!

kindle broke down just after warrantyFeb 09, 2010 I really liked my amazon kindle - we bought it soon after it first came out
unfortunately it has now stopped working and amazon only offers 1 year warranty.
so all the money i was supposed to save by having paying 360 usd upfront -> gone!! now I have to rebuy a new kindle for my content for 260 usd!?
this nice experience is turning into a nightmare. at least with books you know they will never stop opening!
Kindle ReviewFeb 09, 2010 This thing is awesome. Well worth the money. I absolutely love it.
Only thing I would change is the page forward buttons don't seem to be in natural placement for my hands (maybe it's my hands). I'd put a couple in different locations, perhaps a couple at the upper corners as it seems natural to place it on your chest when reading in bed and hold it by one of the corners.
Other than that I wish it was backlit but understand the trade off with battery life. Since the time between charges is one of the things I really like I'll stick with that vs. backlighting.
Books should be cheaper though. It does bother me that I can find paperbacks in Costco for less than on Amazon.....
