5Can't Stop Knifing!Apr 06, 2007
After listening to them, I haven't been about to put their albums down, seriously, it's been a few months...

My introduction to Shonen Knife was though a friend who had Shonen Knife (which includes: many of the songs on "Let's Knife", but in Japanese. ^_^ However, you can buy one and get the other, and feel like it is a completely different experience. The songs on Shonen Knife that have the same title, are not only in English, but they have a different sound altogether, for the most part, longer as well. I wasn't instantly accepting of the English versions, because I was used to the Japanese, but then, after listening to the new songs, I was in love instantly, and about 2-3 times the songs I had originally heard in Japanese.

If you look at the release dates of the songs, originally, you'll see something shocking, intriguing, and most of all amazing. They are from the 80's!!! This came as a major surprise to me because I still think that this kind of music is beyond our time.

It's everybody music, which means anyone can listen to it; it's non-offensive (please, correct me if I'm wrong), fun, and very, very upbeat.

Basically, if you don't know how they are: enrich your life; buy their music. I don't think you can't enjoy the music. And if you know who they are, what are you waiting for?!?!

5Lets rock..Jan 14, 2007
To anyone who has never heard the music of Shonen Knife, I can see how the cover of this album might be a little misleading. But what the album consists of is so much more than just a seemingly endless batch of cutesy japanese pop songs. (though the vocals have a pop sound) I could say the basis of their sound is a combination of early Beatles, combined with the Ramones, throw in some Cramps-like surf guitar, and you have the all female rock wonder otherwise known as Shonen Knife. The vocals are great, bubbly and fun, and the guitar is my favorite, I love the solos so much. My favorite songs are Devil House, Black Bass, I Am A Cat, and Tortoise Brand Pot Scrubbing Cleaner's Theme is awesome, and I like the second version even more. The closing, instrumental surf-rock number, Milky Way, is my fave on any SK album. I love to put this on when I'm not feeling so great, it always makes me feel better, smile, and brings some pep to my day. You can tell they just mean to have a lot of fun and rock out. I think anyone with a passing interest in SK, this would be a good starting point. For those of you who cannot understand some of the words, there is a full lyric sheet. I honestly think anyone that enjoys their music would have a hard time rating this album anything less than 4 stars. Besides, how could you not respect a band that has been together since the 80's, with all the original members,(up until last year, one of the sisters left the band), still performing and making people all over the world smile with delight.

5Run, run, run twist BarbieOct 11, 2006
I've had this cd since 1997 and still enjoy it today. Shonen Knife's music is fun rock-pop music. They have some harder tunes ie. "ANTONIO BAKA GUY" and Ramones inspired cuts like "BEAR UP BISON," "TWIST BARBIE," and "RIDING ON THE ROCKET." My favorites include "CYCLING IS FUN," "INSECT COLLECTOR," "FLYING JELLYBEAN ATTACK," and "WATCHING GIRL." To my understanding this was a domestic release compiling their past hits up to that point. Anyways, it's great music to jam to and listen to while your having morning coffee and getting ready for work.

5Good Stuff!May 14, 2005
Ok - this is a great CD.

Buy it!

I mean, how can you resist 3 japanese girls kicking major rock butt? I wish more of the popular US musical organizations (I hesitate to call them bands any more) had this much energy and originality.

5Extrordinarily RefreshingMar 04, 2005
Take the charm of the Beatles, the power of the Ramones, the odd satire of the Descendents, and the adorableness (dont think its a word but oh well) of Lisa Loeb, shrink wrap it all together, then evenly displace the mixture into three barely 5 feet tall Japanese female bodies. Give them musical equipment, then go rock out with them. This is the essence of Shonen Knife.

Being a half Japanese kid, when I saw the ad for the Shonen Knife show I immediately took interest and went and purchsed this CD. Needless to say, it is incredible. Its one of the most energetic, fun, addictive, and unique records I have ever had the pleasure to listen to; and I will not waste any time picking up the rest of their collection.

The music basically sounds like a mixture of all the bands listed above. Just throw in a lady from Osaka with a high pitched fun voice, some equally fun backing vocals, and a Japanese accent. Then sit back and groove. I only skip one or two tracks on this album, because 90% of it is super cool. Apparently, this was their first U.S. release and I think it contains a variety of tracks from other albums; sort of like a greatest hits, but not. Anyway, check out the first three tracks, "Flying Jelly Attack", and "I Am a Cat". But dont you dare skip the other ones in the process, because youre only hurting yourself.

Ok, sorry in advance because Im going to talk about the show I just saw rather than the album. But Im still so stoked from it I need to let you know. It was easily the best show Ive seen this year, and is in the top three concerts of all time. Actually, its in its own category of cool. Shonen Knife live is just something you have to experience to have a fulfilled life, kind of like the Cramps. And like Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, Naoko and Atsuko put on one of the greatest shows EVER. And I cant forget Etsuko, the little drummer that kicked some serious butt. Each lady had their own on-stage style and flair, and it was something truly special. I also got to meet them afterwards, and being a 6'1" Asian, I kind of felt out of place because they barely came up to my shoulder when they stood next to me. Naoko and Etsuko were also very shy, but it was still such a thrill and honor.

Anyway, I encourage anyone and everyone to give Shonen Knife a listen. Im sure some folks have an either love or hate view on stuff like this, but its still worth giving a chance to. Listen to the songs "Rubber Band" and "Banana Chips" (which unfortunately arent on Lets Knife) while youre at it. And for the sake of humanity, go see them live.

Iko-o iko-o everybody lets go!
Ukaboo ukaboo everybody ukaboo!
