Description:

“Ruby, where is your mother?”

Ruby knows that the game is up. For the past few months, she’s been on her own in the yellow house, managing somehow, knowing that her mother will probably never return.

That’s how she comes to live with Cora, the sister she hasn’t seen in ten years, and Cora’s husband Jamie, whose down-to-earth demeanor makes it hard for Ruby to believe he founded the most popular networking Web site around. A luxurious house, fancy private school, a new wardrobe, the promise of college and a future—it’s a dream come true. So why is Ruby such a reluctant Cinderella, wary and defensive? And why is Nate, the genial boy next door with some secrets of his own, unable to accept the help that Ruby is just learning to give?

Best-selling author Sarah Dessen explores the heart of a gutsy, complex girl dealing with unforeseen circumstances and learning to trust again.

4lock and keyJan 06, 2009
Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen seemed to me, a very deep and emotional story. In my perspective, Dessen's writing is very touching. It has a basic story plot line, but underneath lies something more. It's the type of story that makes you think, long after it is over.
Even in the title of the novel, Dessen adds a hidden meaning. The lock and key symbolism is repetitive throughout the story. It shows how the main character, Ruby, experiences changes throughout the story as she opens up to different characters and lets go of her troubling past. Ruby, moving in with her "long-lost" older sister and her brother-in-law, discovers the true meaning of family. She learns from her mistakes, and other's mishaps as she embarks on the journey to discover herself. Ruby picks up some hints along the way on what it means to be a true friend, which may sound corny.
Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen drives emotions deep into the reader's heart with pages filled with drama and emotional realizations. For every teenage girl to understand life and it's hardship, I recommend Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen.

4Unlock This Great Book!Jan 05, 2009
Lock and Key, by Sarah Dessen, is about a teen girl who goes thorough lots of life changes. Ruby, the teen, lived with her mother but her mother left and she was living on her own. Once the yellow house she lived in the owners came and checked out what was going on and they found Ruby home without a mother. Ruby moved in with her older sister that moved out once she was old enough to move to college. Ruby thought that she never wanted to contact her again and tried so hard to escape. Then she met Nate. Nate was her next door neighbor who seemed to have the perfect life and everything he wanted. Soon enough Ruby found out Nate wasn't so perfect after all.
Sarah Dessen has written many books, including That Summer, Lock and Key, Someone like You, Keeping The Moon and many more. Sarah grew up in a small yellow house just like the one in this book. That was her inspiration.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I've read lots of Sarah Dessen books and this is by far one of the best. This was a great book and was full of real life situation and drama.

5One of my favorite books by Dessen.Jan 03, 2009
Lock and Key was an amazing novel. Sarah Dessen has written some amazing stuff yet again. This book has left me speechless.

To start off with, the relationships between Ruby and almost all of the other main characters was amazing. The relationship between her and Nate was wonderfully written, and though it's not something that I have ever experienced, I felt like I understood why Ruby did not want to get too close to him.

The way that everything is described is amazing, also. During the book, I felt like I was there, standing right next to Ruby, living her life with her.

I can't even tell you how good this book was - it's something you have to experience for yourself. If you haven't read Sarah Dessen before, I would definetly recommend this one. However, my favorites are still Just Listen and This Lullaby. :)

2Not at all what I was expecting.Nov 22, 2008
Whenever Ms. Dessen writes a story of this length, it is tradition that it is a witty, yet touching love story. This time however, the two characters never really find their happily-ever-after, and the whole reason I read this book as because of that. It was a disappointing and altogether unsatisfactory story. Not up to her usual standards at all.

3fails to deliverNov 11, 2008
i tryed to get into the book but couldnt. i mean it was bla, nothing really to rave about or complain either. i felt like she was making Ruby more tough then she should be. it was all just prdictable and a waste really. its one of those books you think you know whats going to happen and Oh look it happened. i didnt buy anything she was feeding in the book.
