5Excellent buyMar 14, 2010
Great sound.

Remote works great as a universal remote. Configure my Panasonic BD80 and Samsung PN50B860, works like a champ.

Remote Control Code for Samsung PN50B860 is 11060.

5Bachelor pad needs an audio upgrade? This is it!Mar 09, 2010
I decided to treat myself for Christmas and dropped this in the cart to go with my LCD. I'm not a true audiophile, and can't afford anything more than an HTIB.
Onkyo is a trusted brand and this unit lives up to their quality. The sound separation on this beast is amazing!

Set-Up: I suggest going to their website and download the manual (pdf) and read through it while it ships. Order any speaker wire, stands, HDMI cables, Optical Audio cables, Component cables that your entire set-up calls for. Once it gets there...be prepared for a HUGE 75-pound, dorm-sized refrigerator box to arrive.
You're going to have to dedicate a whole Saturday (and Sunday if this is your first Home Theater System). Follow the manual EXACTLY as it says. The wires it comes with are color-coded, but if purchasing new wire, grab some tape to label to the different speakers. The connections for the wire are probably the most disappointing for this unit...it's 'post terminals' so you have to strip the wire and insert into the post and then screw the cap on....I recommend getting banana clips...which I'll get the next time I move.
I have all my components (PS2, PS3, DVD/VCR and cable box going into the HDMI inputs). I have my TV optical audio output going to the optical input source for OTA transmissions). The iPod dock is very convenient and that goes into the Port input. I never realized you could control the iPod from the remote...but you can and it's awesome.

Once you've got everything plugged in, plug in the supplied mic so the receiver can make it's adjustments. You'll move the mic around the room and hear different tones coming from the different speakers as it tests and calibrates (do this every time you shift your furniture/ viewing places around).

You can label the different inputs/ source based on what you have.

Sound:
Okay....the first movie I tested this out with was [ASIN:B001GZ6QEC The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]]. Go to the tunnel scene...crank it up to about 45 or so...dim the lights. Be blown away. The separation, the sound effects, highs and lows are amazing!
Warning....the subwoofer on this is bad-a**...(invite your neighbors over for the testing if you live in a condo....lest they call the police for noise disturbance)
The different listening modes are great...I personally prefer Neo-6 for Hi-Def sound...and "Studio" when listening to music. The controller has about 4 different sources you can program to control (in addition to the iPod). It's not a true replacement for a universal but will serve it's purpose if like me, you're on a budget.

Cons
Try as I may, I couldn't find anything to be disappointed about...well it does run warm..but that is expected, so make sure your cabinet has enough airflow going around. I already mentioned the terminal posts which may be annoying to use. The subwoofer light is probably a little annoying (if I HAVE to find a complaint...it's a bright blue when on and a red when off.

Overall...very happy customer....Amazon has the best price...and shipped for FREE!

5Awesome System and great deal for less than $500Mar 04, 2010
I bought this item from Bing cashback option from circuit city as it gave me 10% cashback on $550.

I sold my Samsung DVD HTIB 2-3 months back and was looking for a new since then. I spent 100+ hrs in this and shortlisted
1) Onkyo 6200 + Samsung/LG/Panasonic blu-ray player (player not yet bought)
2) Onkyo 3200 + PS3
3) Samsung blu-ray HTIB not yet released but showed in CES 2010.
4) Yamaha 791 and other custom made packages

Finally after reading 100s of reviews, I chose Onkyo 6200. I just used it for 2 days but I am blown away by its clarity and performance. I can feel the difference between the Samsung HT-x70 that I had earlier and Onkyo 6200.
I am very pleased by this purchase.

Pros- Very advanced codec support
--decodes lossless codes such as DTS HD and Dolby true HD etc
--support many more codes such as neo 6, Dolby IIz etc
--Music and movie modes
-Very easy setup
-- speaker have piano black finish and look awesome...However I am sure I need to take more efforts to keep them clean
--Audessy setup worked just fine
-- generous HDMI and other connectivity on AV receiver
-Earlier I was not looking for Ipod deck with HTIB. However when I plugged in my Ipod nano 5G with the Ipod dech that was supplied, I was delighted to see the amazing compatibility. Onkyo not only can play songs from Ipod but also can play Videos. However Onkyo does not upconvert the video which is bad. This feature was present in earlier Onkyo 6100 and was removed (might be because of poor reviews :-))
-- I connected my cheap TV-dvd player combo to Onkyo via coaxial cable and still the sound was amazing. I kept sub-woofer level at min as I did not want any complaints from neighbor.
-- Can set up Front High speakers or surround back as per ur space constraints. I am planning either use 2 speakers as front high or get a rocketfish wireless kit for surround back.

Cons- As I said, it does not up-convert analog videos. I really wanted this feature but settled for Onkyo 6200.
-- 73 labs..its heavy..UPS guy could not deliver it alone
-- 10 inch sub looks very huge if it matters for you

4Does what we hoped.Feb 27, 2010
This is our first HTIB system. After much reviewing of other systems both online and in retail stores, this model just seemed to fit our needs and tastes in sound output. I have been very pleased with the system. Everything worked like it should right out of the box. The system is in a 15'x 25' room with wood floors and plenty of seating at 15-20' from the TV. Even at a mid volume setting of 45/80, there is plenty of sound to fill the room. The system definitely satisfies our needs for better sound immersion.

The box that showed up was large (20"x23"x36") and heavy (73 lbs); this was all expected. The subwoofer and receiver are not small or light. We had viewed the system at a local retailer to make sure my wife was sort of comfortable with the size of the components("sort of" was the best I could achieve), Compared to the other systems we looked at, the subwoofer and the speakers were a bit larger than similar HTIB systems I was considering without a built in blue ray player.

Packing was impressive; everything was tightly contained in protective plastic and foam, and the components, packed modularly by function, were held together with lots of plastic banding. All the components were methodically laid out, and unpacking them was straightforward.

Setup was not a breeze, but this is my first HTIB. I do not swap out devices regularly, and our devices are more than a few years old. Thus, set up was not as simple as connecting a single hdmi cable from device to the receiver. I had to learn or relearn a lot of the stuff in manuals, and scour the internet for possible ways to hook all the stuff up. I needed to integrate the 6200 with a Motorola DCT6200 digital cable box (CblB), a DVD player, and a VCR, all of which were non hdmi, and a late model Sharp Aquos TV with all types of input ports. All the speaker wires were color coded to the clips on the well labeled speakers, so that went quickly. Most of the time was spent figuring out what was the best audio and digital signals to use from the various devices, and whether they should go to the tv or to the receiver. I did reach an early stage of just staring at all the inputs and outputs on all the devices and go..."ohhhh".

My only real set up lesson-by-failure was to discover that signals from component and composite video were not internally converted and output to the hdmi out port on this receiver. I knew this system did not up convert from 480 to 1080, but did not realize that what this practically meant is conversion to hdmi output. Each type of video input has its own type of output that must be independently sent to the TV. My fault though, the manual points this out in several places. Still, nothing like a big blank TV screen with booming audio to scare the bejesus out of you. A lot of searching for cheap cables and two trips to electronics stores later, only the external devices audio outputs or digital optical outputs went into the receiver; the video outputs went directly to the TV input video ports, including the cable box. This changed when I requested my cable company swap out my old cable box for a new one with hdmi output. With a newer DCH3200 box, I was at least able to remove one giant cable and an optical cable and replace it with two small hdmi cables, from CblB to receiver and from receiver to TV.

Once all the cables were in place, the rest of the setup was straightforward; I just following the Onkyo manual for speaker and device input assignments. At the moment, the 6200 is overkill for us with 7.1. Our cable provider only supports 5.1, and we have not upgraded to a Blue-ray player.

Fun with remotes: I preferred the digital cable box remote to turn on the CblB, the tv, and the receiver simultaneously with the 'All On' button. Some Onkyo receivers do not play nicely with the standard Comcast remote with the DCT6200 or DCH3200; the ht-s6200 is one of these. (Search internet for more info.) The standard Onkyo codes will only turn the receiver on or off with the 'All On' remote button, but not both. I could not find an Onkyo code that would work with the volume control on the Comcast remote. The Onkyo remote can be coded to turn on or off the CblB, but it does not support the digital cable channel menu paging functions, which are critical to a channel surfer. Basically, I needed to constantly use two remotes. I fixed this problem by moving into the world of a universal remote - a Logitech Harmony One. Expensive remote, but an extremely convenient way to solve all the remote problems and integrate every component. I will rarely need to use the device specific remotes.

I recently integrated the Onkyo system with a Rocketfish Wireless HD Audio Starter Kit to eliminate running wires to the rear speakers - worked great as far as my ears are concerned. No more wires accross the room.

3decent price for a decent product...Feb 25, 2010
this is an average product, but the price was not bad. i bought this more for the receiver. at some point i will upgrade the speakers. they are pretty cheap and not the best sounding. the most disappointing aspect is how slow the processing is. i have our cable box running through the receiver. switching between hd and non-hd channels, there is a 5 second delay. when changing from xbox to cable, there is a 10 second delay. other than that, i am happy with the purchase.
