Started out strong, ended weak.Nov 01, 2009 I got a PS2 back in 2005 or so. I thought the world of it, especially over the PS1. I mainly got the PS2 because I already had a few PS1 games that I wanted to be able to play, along with some newer games. (Plus, Pawn America was selling PS2 systems for $100.) At the time, they were making rockin' PS2 games, but since newer systems have been released, (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, etc.) the people who make games don't seem to want to make much effort into PS2 games anymore. I tend to trust IGN for reviews on games, and according to them, the quality of PS2 games has gone downhill, probably because the people who design video games are concentrating more on the newer systems. To me, and lots of others' reviews, that makes things really unfair for PS2 users. Game systems these days are getting to be really expensive, especially for people who don't have much money, and designers of video games, or whatever you want to call them, don't seem to pay much attention. I haven't purchased a game in several months, and that's why. So, it's a loss of money on someone's part.
Good Budget ConsoleOct 17, 2009 If you want a good console that easy on the bank account, go for this one. I figured "It's the weekend, I'll write a long review about my Playstation 2".
Console Design: I haven't taken it from its resting place on top of our home stereo system, but it is definitely small enough to stick in a backpack. It is definitely sturdy. You can pretty much stick this thing anywhere, as you can stand it up, or lay it down flat. The dull black color is cool, and it doesn't clash with other home entertainment devices (unless, of course, you have a TV that sports all the colors of the rainbow). Design is is very sleek. The disc cover pops up instead of having a slideout tray as in previous models.
Graphics: The graphics are decent with the bundled A/V cable IF you have an old standard definition TV. The quality severely decreases with the A/V cable on an HD TV. If you have an HD television I would recommend purchasing a component Playstation 2 cable. Try these:Premium High Resolution Component AV Cable for Playstation 3 PS3, Playstation 2 Ps2, Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Component Video + Audio/Video 6ft Cable: by Abacus24-7. If it says PS3 on it, it will still work with the PS2 because they use the same connection. Also, the quality of the graphics depends on the game. Some PS2 games support 720p resolutions. These games will benefit most from the component cable should you choose to purchase it.
Backwards Compatibility: If you have a large collection of old PS games, rejoice! This console DOES support PS games and they generally have better graphics when played on the PS2. And, I believe that some of the PS games are more fun than PS2 games of the same "caliber", so to speak. So if you want to upgrade but don't want to toss all your PS games, then this is the console for you.
Bundled Controller: I love the PS2 DUALSHOCK CONTROLLER controller that came with my PS2. The controller matches the console color. The analog sticks are very responsive. In fact, all the buttons are very responsive. I was so happy with the controller that I ordered another one. But, when I got it, after about 5-6 hours of use, the R3 and L3 buttons became unresponsive. Not a BIG deal, but a lot of "extras" are controlled by L3 and R3, so you just don't have those extras when using that controller.
Memory Cards: In order for you to fully enjoy a PS2, you must purchase a PS2 memory card. The Sony cards, which I have, would be the only card I would get. A friend of mine has the Max Memory cards and he told that sometimes it glitches his system and won't let him save certain game files. The Sony's are more expensive for the same amount of memory space, but I should think it would be worth a few extra bucks to get a card that wouldn't cause your PS2 to crash.
Games: There is a huge array of games for a PS2. Now, you you can get a lot of older games for 10-20 dollars at Wal-Mart or Target. But newer games still cost about $40. I mostly play sports and shooter games or "little kid" games a.k.a.Lego Star Wars, Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron. The sports games are pretty coplicated when it comes to controls, but shooter games are relatively simple, with the dual analog stick controls. Sometimes, you'll be able to get a steal on a game. For example: At Wal-Mart, about six months ago I found this awesome game for $10: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. So keep your eyes open for good deals on games. Once again, the game selection is quite vast, with games for pretty much everyone out there. Also, I've found that some games take longer to load that others. If you have one of these, and it takes a long time to load, don't think that your console is going to crash.
Overall, this is, as I said earlier, a great budget console. If you get the component cable for your HD TV, an extra controller, the memory cards, and some slick games, you'll be set to go with great graphics and a fast console. I love it and would buy it again.
excellentOct 16, 2009 i got this video game last week and i felt surprise.its excellent.i play everyday.here is the best place to by that, the prices are unbeatable and they delivered it so fast.thanx amazon!!
A classic systemOct 13, 2009 The PlayStation 2 Slim you see here is ridiculously small (you won't believe how small it is until you see it), power-conscious (it only uses 30-45 watts), and compatible with thousands of Playstation 2 and PlayStation 1 games out there. The new-fangled Playstation 3 has been released and been out for several months, but the PS2 stands as a stable, refined, and well proven platform that cost-effective gamers will want to look into. There's no better value for your money.
Gamers will be pleased at the extreme variety of excellent games available at cheap prices. I've purchased at least a dozen games used or new, and they still hold up today: games like the cinematic uniqueness of the Metal Gear solid series, the raw, campy gore of the God of War duo, the frightening, atmospheric world of Resident Evil 4, the epic, colorful, sprawling adventures of Dragon Quest VIII, Shadow of the Colossus and Okami, the sprawling battles of Call of Duty 3 and Killzone, and the kid-friendly romps such as the Jack and Daxter trilogy and the Ratchet and Clank series. All of these games stand up as some of the greatest interactive pieces of entertainment available today, and none of them cost me more than a few hundred. This is the perfect time to get into the PlayStation 2 and it's unparalleled level of fun. And for the non-gamers, this version of the PS2 is capable of Progressive Scan output for DVDs as well, and it looks very nice.
If you buy this system, make sure you are aware of the additional purchases you may need to make. A memory card is required and not included in the system; this will allow games to save their data so that players can resume their adventures later on (about ten buks). Gamers with an HD TV (or even one capable of Progressive Scan) will want the Component Cables that Sony sells for the PS3; these PS3 cords are compatible with the PS2 and the included standard composite cables are rather fuzzy (about twenty bucks). Games that allow a second gamer to jump into the fun will need an extra controller (twenty-five). The PS2 Slim comes built in with the Ethernet port so all you need to do is plug in an Ethernet cable into the back of the system (one of those blue cords that come off of your Internet router) and set a few settings on your PS2 games.
Those looking for a old, well established system to play their video games and DVDs will find the PS2 a compelling platform. There aren't very may new games out there, but heck, all of the classics that have been released over the past nine years are more than enough. For game enthusiasts or even casual players looking for a good time, I can offer no higher recommendation.
(I bought the Silver PlayStation 2 Slim, which is identical to the Black pictured above but is no longer sold on Amazon. The Black would be a nicer color anyway, though may show off its collected dust.)
Great SystemOct 02, 2009 This is my 3ed playstation 2, I got my first one when it came out. They hold up pretty well, around 3 or 4 years, I just got this a a replacement for my older one. I wish the ps3 would play the ps2 games but this is so small that it does not take up much space and is worth it if you loke to play older games
