3Gilding well explainedOct 24, 2008
Reference text for Gilding, I was looking for a book that could explain Gilding without taking private classes, as a painter I am, I got it with this book, the only complaint I have is that it is extremely poor in images, just reduced to a few drawings, despite this I highly reccommed it

4Useful information on gildingFeb 26, 2008
As the title suggests, this is a very practical book on gilding. My interest stems from the writing of Byzantine icons with gilded haloes, using gold leaf for the background and shell gold for decorating a garment. Although my introduction to gilding was directly from an iconographer, the book reviews the subject so thoroughly your knowledge of the subject is deepened and expanded. It covers types of gold, the tools used and the methods of application for various uses as well as what the authors refer to as special techniques. It even discusses putting gold bands on harpsichords. The list of suppliers at the end is very useful as is the brief bibliography. Because of my experience I think I would advise learning this art under a tutor.

5An indispensable primerSep 23, 2006
I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't carry this volume - it's available elsewhere new at half the price listed here - but anyone interested in taking up gilding will find that this book provides a beautifully readable and concise description of the various topics a novice must understand: Goldleaf and other metals, Gilding Tools, Gold Size (adhesive) and Resists (anti-adhesives), Oil and Water Gilding, Gesso, Special Techniques, Varnishes, etc. The authors' skillful writing packs an immense amount of information into such a small package in the clearest prose imaginable. Don't let the small size and plain cover fool you - it's worth every penny.
