5Good stuffOct 16, 2008
For this music to work, you gotta like Leon's unique sound, but if you dig what comes out when he sings, this disc will make you smile and laugh and cry a happy tear or two.

5I love this album and Leon RussellSep 13, 2008
I had to buy the plastic CD a year ago before Amazon MP3 got it. I love Delta Lady and Tight Rope; just classics and more. He was a studio musician for Phil Spector and wrote for Joe Cocker who also does a classic version of Delta Lady. You can't go wrong.

5Stranger in a Strange Land......Apr 17, 2008
Hmmmm.....does this album ever awaken the mind. If you are procastinating on buying this album or any other Leon Russell album, wobble no more...purchase and discover!

A year had passed since "coming home" wounded from a second combat tour with the USMC in Vietnam. Music was the way the returning psyche was numbed and the veterans quietly slipped back into an America transformed from mainstream into a flooding torrent of rage. I vividly recall a 1968 (1969?)concert at the Portland Coliseum (...as in Portland, Oregon), the stage is dark, the warm up band is in place, a solo piano begins to play. Oh no, what a rip, I have to sit through some dud warm up while awaiting the Blood Sweat and Tears main act. Suddenly the lights are on and Leon Russell begins to rock with Delta Lady....what a revelation, Blood Sweat and Who? The man is pure soulful with ranges that bring you from tearful introspection to flat out boogey. No downside to Leon Russell and his wife. When Leon Russell teams up with Willie Nelson its like two scoops of masterfully blended music. You won't find the two of them on this album, but go find...!

5THE ONE AND ONLY LEON RUSSELLNov 26, 2007
Retrospective is a must have for those who possess a deep love for great piano song showmanship. Leon Russell is truly a one of a kind artist who can cause the listener to appreciate various genres of music.

It is quite arguable that Mr. Russell was perhaps one of the first true crossover artists who could blend in jazz, country, rock, folk, pop and, to some extent, the slightest traces of bluegrass. The only other solo artist who comes to mind besides Elvis who dared to amalgamate so many different styles and ranges and make it all sound great is Bob Dylan.

Retrospective is an ideal collection for those who want to subdivide Russell's music into its separate phases: vaudeville, blues, jazz, etc.
A rare treasure and great artist is Leon Russell. Listening to it brings back fond memories of watching the early Saturday Night Live musical guest appearance with his wife, Mary McCreary, and what a great show that was!

Included in the package are A Song for You, This Masquerade, the classic Tightrope, and the too infrequently played Top 40 hit, Lady Blue.

4Just like Bob DylanNov 11, 2007
Cpl. Green, USMC said it best when he said "Bob Dylan is one non-singing M***er F***er!" Well, so is Leon Russell, but without the mad lyric writting skills. Still, he made a place in history, and for those of us that remember the day, it's a nice place to revisit once in a while.
