3flawed mixingMar 15, 2007
I agree that this recording could have been incredible. However, the mixing of the orchestra leaves a lot to be desired. It's very echo-y, distant, muffled at times, and sounds like the orchestra is in a different room than the singers. It's a problem in the mixing booth.

What a shame they goofed it up in the mixing booth - it could have been so good.

3It could have been great.Feb 28, 2007
This recording could be superb! Brilliantly reworked orchestrations, and an excellent new cast, headed by Lesley Garrett and Connie Fisher. Alas, 'twas not to be. Many songs, including the title track feel rushed, to the point of losing their power and poignancy. Connie Fisher sounds as though she had a nasty cold on the day of the recording - her singing sounds weak and breathy. Occasional lapses in pitch correction and editing (when one of the boys sings "fa" in "do-re-mi" one can swear it was not recorded with the rest of the song) further weaken the recording. Finally, the creative team has chosen to revert to the pre-Ernest-Lehman idiocy of having Mother Abess sing "My Favorite Things" with Maria in her office. What an abomination! Fortunately, the CD does contain the proper "Maria&Kids" version, so one can just "edit out" the miscreant track.

All in all, a beautiful treatment of an incredible work is reduced to "ok at best" by pour execution. The rumor is, this production is Broadway-bound. Let's hope its Broadway cast album is done better.

5You have to see the show to truely enjoy the CD!Jan 24, 2007
As someone who has seen this new revival of The Sound of Music, I think this CD is fantastic. Connie Fisher is amazing and she has a great supporting cast around her. The musical itself is not a stage version of the well-loved movie, but a new version of the original stage production and so not all the songs are as well known.

I'd say, buy this CD if your a fan of The Sound of Music, but be aware that to fully understand it, you need to come to London and see the musical!

3Listen to Julie Andrews insteadJan 08, 2007
I really wanted to like this version since I know the actress was picked from a reality show and was going to be the female lead of this new version of a classic musical. But when I listened to the CD, I was very disappointed. Connie Fisher, the new Maria, has a great voice and can sing very well, but she's not Julie Andrews or Mary Martin or Rebecca Luker. Many of the songs are shortened and I kept waiting to hear the wonderful dance music of Sixteen Going on Seventeen but it never came. Some songs are altogether missing big chunks of the songs, like Do Re Mi and I have Confidence. But I did like the new version of The Lonely Goathead a lot. It was a fresh, new way of heariing it. I hope the show does well for the star, but I'll listen to Julie anytime.

1Dreadful. Simply Dreadful.Jan 08, 2007
Dreadful. Simply dreadful. The only thing missing from this holiday pantomime is Tommy Steele as "Buttons".
