 It's the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack albumApr 09, 2009
It's definitely a must-have for fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it is great. Although it's missing a few tunes, that partially adds to the enjoyment. Actually, I'm just trying to make it sound better than it is, but seriously, it doesn't ruin it that much. I feel that the addition of not only a remix of "The Time Warp" does more than make up for the missing tunes, but an instrumental mix of the remix adds to it. Although there are missing tracks, this is the soundtrack album of The Rocky Horror Picture Show to get.
I think that the arrangement of "Science Fiction/Double Feature" is a great arrangement, but I personally prefer the usually stage production arrangement because it's more of a happy song, and this arrangement made it more of a ballad than it really is. However, I enjoy the arrangement, and I think that the orchestrating is wonderful. I feel that the reprise of the song is the perfect arrangement because it's after the ending, and the story is a tragedy.
"Damn It, Janet" is very well done, and I personally feel that Barry Bostwick's performance, and Susan Sarandon's performance are pretty much the definitive performances of Brad and Janet that everyone looks to. I do like how in stage production arrangements, Brad starts the singing earlier on, but the audience can add a few lines with this arrangement.
"Over at the Frankenstein Place" is one of my favorite songs from the show. I especially love the bridge, sung by Richard O'Brien. I don't like how in the film, Brad's verse was deleted, but I think that the arrangement does more than make up for it.
"The Time Warp" is the big hit from the album and movie, and it's a good fun song. The tap dance section was deleted from the song on the album, but that's just a small disappointment.
"Sweet Transvestite" is where Tim Curry first comes into the picture, and his performance is considered the greatest for a reason. Although he was much more energetic on the Roxy Cast album, this is a great arrangement.
"The Charles Atlas Song" on this album uses different lyrics than the stage version. I don't really have a preference on which one is better or worse. I also like the arrangement for the film better, but now just about every stage production has the early silent movie style piano during a couple of parts of the song. The reprise is really just an extension of the song.
"Hot Patootie" is done almost perfectly. Meat Loaf seems to be one of the only Eddies that did a good job with that role, and I think he's also one of the only good Dr. Scotts. He's probably the only actor I know of that pulled off both parts, unless I'm forgetting about an actor I saw live.
"Touch Me" is done really well here. I personally like the original stage arrangement where Rocky sings the chorus of "Hot Patootie" in along with the final couple of repeats of the chorus. I feel that the repeating of "Creature of the night" from all of the characters works.
"Eddie's Teddy" was written sometime while the original production was going. I feel that Meat Loaf's performance was much better than Jonathon Adams' performance. However, this was much more comedic. I feel that the German accent ruins the part more than it helps because Frank is supposed to be incorrect about Dr. Scott being a nazi. Isn't he?
"Rose Tint My World" is great, like always. It's basically the one song where almost everyone in the cast sings, and I think that the arrangement here is one of the best.
"I'm Going Home" is one of my favorite songs from the film, and I think that this is one of the best arrangements. I think that Tim Curry's performance was better on the Roxy Cast album, but I didn't like the xylophone or organ from that arrangement.
They actually had "Super Heroes" on this album. I thought it was deleted from the movie. The arrangement for "Super Heroes" is another one of those classic arrangements, and it's one of my favorite arrangements.
Although there are missing tunes, this is the album to start with.

I know people may say, "then watch the movie if you want the songs". I have, and i do. I was hoping that these songs were more like ripped from the movie exactly as heard, but these sound like the sing along tracks used during recording. some tracks lack things like sighs and yawn. while some poeple may like that, i rather the real thing. but rather minor problem, especially since i own the movie.
tim curry's songs are the best in my opinion. his feeling in the songs, especially i'm going home, are rather startling.
many people online have complained how simple the songs are in rocky horror, but they can go stuff themselves with olive flavored jello. i dont think these songs are supposed to have super deep philosophical meaning, but meant to sound great and be catchy. which they do greatly. i'd say this movie is right along with fiddler on the roof as one of the best musicals ever made.
now my biggest problem of all with this collection. NO SWORD OF DAMOCLES! That is the song played when rocky is just born, and is running from frank. very nice song, but no where to be found on this album.
my advice, rip the dvd of its songs. better feeling, all songs (if english version i think). much more work, but this is worth it. or just do like millions of others, play the dvd so many times that the laser cuts through the disc.
still this album is good to have. the prices of people walking by while im listening to tim curry sing sweet transvestite is rather enjoyable.

Tim Curry is still a god amonst mere mortals, let us all give thanks to Richard O'Brien. Amen.
This album has most of the songs from the Picture Show (No "The Sword of Damcoslese" & "Planet Shmanet Janet"). But, you NEED this album, you will crave it 24/7, trust me.

Like the title says this is the closest you can get to the actual movie. If you love Rocky Horror Picture Show then you need this CD!!

This may be heresy, but I've always felt the music for this film was far superior to the film itself. I think the experience of the film is better than the film itself. Truth be told, the film is rather boringly directed, clumsily staged, and if it wasn't for the soundtrack, it would have been forgotten about. Luckily, Richard O'Brien's soundtrack is awesome, tuneful, and never gets tiring on the ear. It's justifably a cult item, and while I've listened to the soundtrack more times than I can remember, I've only seen the film once (on VHS). Even the lesser known songs are still great (like Over at the Frankenstein's Place and Eddie). The classics are awesome, with kudos going to Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul and some tune called The Time Warp.
I still would like to see the film in a theater, mainly for the Rocky Horror experience and to sing along with songs I really dig, not because it's a great film. Get the soundtrack, and once in a while, crossdress and see the film in a theater.
