Good dock, two models ,with and without FirewireOct 23, 2009 Hi Guys
I am just writing this preview to let you know that there are two different versions of this dock >>
A) With USB and eSata Ports
B) With USB,1394a(Firewire)and eSata Ports
I got the one without Firewire connection , as you dont really need all three anyways in practical view. esata is very fast and USB was trasferring data from the dock to another drive at abot 12-13 mb/secs.
Its a good buy and they give you all the accesories u ever need.
Rated 4 coz the 2.5 inch opening is not covered eh!!!

Very useful. Somewhat cheaply made.Oct 13, 2009 It does what you expect it to. And it does it well. It was recognized out of the box in Windows XP with Service Pack 3. I assume it will work fine in Vista and 7. Works well. Looks good. Simple to operate. Comes with all the cables and instructions. So what's wrong? Two things. One, the power cable socket into the hub is a little loose so I get scared it may come out if someone knocked the dock. This would be disastrous during a data transfer. Secondly, I expected a slightly more solid feel from it considering the price. It uses cheap plastic. Plastic is light and so is the dock. However, light means it can easily overturn during insertion and removal of hard drives. Do I recommend it? Definitely.

There's a reason they call these "toasters"Oct 01, 2009 Purchased this item along with a brand new Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive. Unit looks good and the idea behind it is genius but like Eugene Vasserman's review I too noticed that the drive wobbled a bit in the slot. Installation was a snap and the first time I used it everything worked beautifully.
The second time I used it, I placed the drive in the socket making certain it was pressed all the way down and pressed the power button on the front. The pretty blue light came on and I waited for the drive letter to show up on my screen but it never showed. I looked over and the blue light was out which evidently means your toast is finished. I ejected the drive and was greeted by the smokey smell of sizzling silicon, mmmmm, what a delight!
In my case I believe the socket was just sloppy enough to allow a short between two or more pins on the hard drive. Take a look at a sata drive and see how close they are together, it wouldn't take much play in the socket connection to cause a problem.
My suggestion is that you get one of the self-contained external drives. My wife got a WD drive and while it does make a bit of noise it's not excessive and it works pretty well. The only problem with it is that when you re-boot the computer, unless the usb cable is pulled or the power to the drive is turned off the boot process hangs until you do so and re-boot. I think it's due to a wrong setting in the bios boot sequence but so far everything I've tried has failed.

More useful than expectedSep 14, 2009 I bought this device so I could back up my video library to an HD and then, when it got too big for the drive, swap in another drive to save the newer video. And that's one of the things I do, but I've found this to be far more useful than I expected.
I've got this device hooked up via the eSATA connection that came with it. Included in the box were a back plate with cable to the motherboard SATA and an eSATA cable for connection from the back of the machine to the back of this device. It also included a USB cable that I used for a short while (USB is just too slow for multi-gigabyte files). The only thing about using the eSATA that's bad (but not much) is that the cable end that plugs into the back of the computer is a little fragile. By that I mean that it doesn't click in or in any other way attach except for the friction of the connection. Now, this is much like USB, but it's not as tight and firm, so it can be easily pulled out, as my new kitten discovered... Additionally, ulike when the drive is connected via USB, it does not appear to be hot swappable (i.e. you can't just power down the dock swap drives, and power it back on - you need to reset the computer). However, the speed of eSATA over USB far outweighs these minor issues.
As stated earlier, the dock is *very* useful - I use one drive to backup my video collection, one drive to use as a "work drive" for when I'm editing large video files, and another to hold large virtual machines that I use. It also came in handy when the O/S on my bothers machine flaked out and I needed to pull off all the data before reformatting the drive. At the price of drives today (very large drives are available now for under 50 cents a GB), this is about the cheapest high speed removable storage you can lay hands on.
The build quality of the dock is about what I'd expected - it's plastic, but not cheap feeling. It has some heft to it. The large front button is easy to get at to turn it on and off and it glows an attractive blue when on. Additionally, the large blue light below the power switch shows drive activity, which is nice - it drives me nuts when I don't have HD lights to tell me what's going on!
Overall a good product that's worth the price you pay for it.
